Yesterday, I was delighted to learn that Trinity has remained Ireland’s top university, according to the Times Higher Education Supplement table. Better still, Trinity is now considered the 12th best university in Europe, and 53rd in the world. It has thus broken into the international university elite, overtaking such prestigious institutions as the London School of Economics and St. Andrews in Scotland. Trinity also ranks second in global immunology research.
Provost John Hegarty must be commended for this fine achievement. He said: “Such a high ranking is an outstanding achievement for a university in a small country, competing internationally with much larger and better-resourced universities.” He also aims to be among the top 50 universities in the world.

Improved investment in research seems to be paying off as it was leading to more citations of the university’s work in international journals and also to improved ratings among academics working in other institutions. Trinity’s high ratios of international students, as well as the institution’s staff and staff-student ratios have also benifited the college’s standing.
