A delicious rumour circulated in Leinster House last week: the mandarins in Merrion Street were said to be incensed because Budget secrets were pouring out the door of their sealed fortress at the speed of light. As usual, a member of the Cabinet was under suspicion.
One of Sir Humphrey’s army is supposed to have set a trap for the cabinet leaker. Information on the fate of the Budget hot potato – the tourism and hospitality tax – was fed to the suspect.
