Seanad Eireann

The Seanad is the upper house of the Oireachtas and is composed of sixty members.

  • 43 are elected through five vocational panels by TDs, existing Senators and local councillors.
  • 11 are appointed directly by An Taoiseach
  • 3 are elected by the graduates of the National University of Ireland
  • 3 are elected by the graduates of the University of Dublin (Trinity)
  • An election to the Seanad must take place within 90 days of the dissolution of Dáil Eireann. Article 18 of Bunreacht na hEireann governs the membership, tenure and election of members of Seanad Eireann.
