Kenny Waves the White Flag

EUROPE’S bankers were given their ‘get out of jail’ card. Ireland’s Government opted for further captivity. Ireland’s taxpayers remain incarcerated.

Quango Dodges Lee’s Comeback

GEORGE Lee is back with a bang. Last Monday, the man who might today be Finance Minister — if he had only stayed with Fine Gael — threw down the gauntlet to the new pretender, Michael Noonan.

George presented Pensions Shock! — a gem of a programme on RTE.

Paddy Confronts Banker Cabal

LAST Thursday, Patrick Honohan laid claim to be Brian Lenihan’s proudest legacy.

The Central Bank governor stabbed his new Fine Gael/ Labour masters in the back at a conference in Dublin. At the same time, he delivered an uppercut to Ireland’s bankers.

His outburst of independence was true to form. Honohan is happy to lash out at any body obstructing economic recovery. Almost a year ago, he had rebuked his patrons — the late Brian Lenihan and Taoiseach Brian Cowen — for allowing their Cabinet colleagues to peddle porkies by denying rumours of talks with the IMF. Patrick spilled the beans when he chose RTE’s Morning Ireland flagship programme to tell the nation that the IMF’s Ajai Chopra was already packing his suitcase for a swoop on Dublin.

The intervention was explosive. The Government was forced to come clean.

NTMA Immortals Win Again

Go on. Bow and scrape.

These guys are rocket scientists. They are the immortals of the Irish financial world. They have doctorates in derivatives, medals in management and degrees in debt. They salivate at the difference between GGD, GNP and GDP. Bores to beat the band, they float high above the radar, almost immune from financial flak.

New Era, Same Old Gang

LET me tell you the story of lucky old Eileen. Lucky Eileen landed a job last week. Not any old job, but a six-figure job.

It will carry all the bells and whistles of the financial sector. Her package would not humiliate a banker.

Eileen was not interviewed for the appointment. She was, somehow, assumed into it.

The job, despite being in the gift of a state agency, was never advertised.
